President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly offered the post of national security adviser to retired general Michael Flynn, a hardliner on Islamic terrorism.

Flynn is registered as a Democrat, but was Trump's main national security adviser during the election campaign, and was said to be the front-runner for the job when Trump gained victory over Hillary Clinton last week.

In the role, Flynn would be a key figure in the White House as he shapes foreign and military policy alongside a president with no experience in such matters.

It is unclear as of yet whether Flynn has accepted, or will accept, the job.

During the Republican National Convention the former general gave a stern speech warning against the dangerous threat of Islamic State, and calling on more aggressive action from the US administration to stop its progress.

He has been criticised for regular appearances on Russian state TV network RT, as well as attending numerous events with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

It would be the third major appointment from Trump this week after the appointment of Reince Priebus as chief of staff, and former Breitbart editor Steve Bannon as chief strategist.

Reports earlier this year suggested Flynn was in the running to run alongside Trump as a vice-presidential candidate, a job that was ultimately filled by Indiana governor Mike Pence.
