Donald Trump's busy first week as US President is set to continue on Wednesday with the signing of an executive order to start the process of one of his standout campaign promises - building a wall on the US-Mexico border.

Already this week Trump has signed orders pertaining to the withdrawal of the TPP, renegotiation of NAFTA, and the restarting of the construction of controversial oil pipelines between the US and Canada.

Now the Republican will get to work on the controversial subject of tackling Muslim immigration, or "national security" as he calls it, one of the mainstays of his election campaign.

Reports suggested Trump will impose a temporary ban on refugees, with Reuters citing congressional aides as it reported the executive orders would aim to limit immigration for refugees “and some visa holders from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen”.

"Big day planned on national security tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!" Trump tweeted late on Tuesday.

Trump has previously floated the idea of reestablishing a 'Muslim registry', compiling a list of US-based foreigners that would largely target those of the Muslim faith.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday, the head of Trump's national security transition team James Carafano said that the immigration measures were "prudent".

"We have seen legitimate cases of transnational terrorism of people travelling from one country to another to do terrorist acts," Carafano said.

"We have actually seen a number of them in western Europe, so a country putting in place prudent measures to interdict terrorist travel by making sure you are screening refugees and visa applicants appropriately is not in any way imprudent."
