Hillary Clinton's former rival for the Democratic nomination for US president Bernie Sanders has urged voters to get behind her and to ensure Donald Trump does not win the election on November 8.

The Vermont senator was speaking at a campaign rally in Wisconsin in support of Clinton, and said the country was in better hands with her at the helm.

He said that in particular this presidential election was about much more than a simple personality contest.

"This is not voting for your best friend to become class president," Sanders said. "What we are doing now is voting for the most important elected person, not only in our country, but in the world."

Sanders added that Republican Trump is a personality which divides the country rather than brings it together.

"We have today a candidate of a major political party who is making the cornerstone of his campaign hatred. That type of candidate must not be elected president of the United States."

"We should be proud of our diversity. It makes us a stronger people. Hillary Clinton wants to bring us together. Donald Trump wants to divide us up."
