Michael Flynn, the national security adviser ousted by Donald Trump earlier this year after only weeks in the position, has offered to testify on claims of Russian interference in the US presidential election in exchange for immunity.

In February Flynn was removed from office after accusations that he misled the administration about his relationship with Russian envoys.

Trump’s administration has been dogged by allegations of contact with Russia during the 2016 election campaign, in which several intelligence agencies concluded that the Kremlin had attempted to influence the result.

In a written statement from his lawyer Robert Kelner, Flynn said that he has a “story to tell”.

"General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should the circumstances permit," the statement read.

“The media are awash with unfounded allegations, outrageous claims of treason, and vicious innuendo directed against him.”

Kelner’s statement concluded by adding that Flynn would not face an official hearing unless he was guaranteed some form of immunity.

“No reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicised, witch hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution,” it said.

Figures representing the intelligence committees in the House and Senate have denied that there has been any deal cut with Flynn. Or even that there have been any negotiations to that effect.

Russian president Vladimir Putin on Thursday denied that there was any interference from his government in the election, which saw victory for Trump over Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton.
