Jack Dorsey, the CEO of microblogging site Twitter has said that the platform is not responsible in any way for the triumph of Donald Trump in the US presidential election, despite the former reality television star's adept use of the site.

Twitter is known as a social network where many people receive their news, and has been seen as a critical method of getting messages through to the public.

When asked at the Code Commerce conference in San Francisco on Tuesday about whether his company played any part in the surprise election of Trump, Dorsey was unequivocal in his response.

"America's responsible for Donald Trump being president," Dorsey said.

The CEO did acknowledge that the way elections are run nowadays has changed significantly, at least in part through the use of Twitter and other social media outlets.

Trump gained an unexpected victory over Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton last month, despite the majority of polls indicating a victory for the former secretary of state for months.

"Having the President-elect on our service using it as a direct line of communication allows everyone to see what is on his mind in the moment," he added.

"We're definitely entering a new world where everything is on the surface and we can all see that in real time and we can have conversations about it."

Twitter has received criticism from many commentators, who believe that there should be some form of regulation on the company's part of the news that comes through it. It is an area that Dorsey says has caused the company conflict.

"We have a role and responsibility to make sure that people are seeing what they need to see and they can have easy conversations and really get to the truth and that's complicated," he said.
