Twitter has removed an image tweeted by the US President Donald Trump from its platform, following a copyright complaint from the New York Times.

The tweet from the president published on 30 June had a meme that read “In reality they’re not after me they’re after you I’m just in the way” with Trump’s picture in the background.

Under copyright laws, the photograph, which was taken for the newspaper for an article in 2015, still belongs to the New York Times.

The newspaper issued a Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaint according to a notice posted on the Lumen Database.

“Per our copyright policy, we respond to valid copyright complaints sent to us by a copyright owner or their authorized representatives,” a Twitter spokesperson told CNBC.

“Twitter responds to copyright complaints submitted under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”),” the company’s copyright policy says.

Twitter now displays the message “This image has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder,” in place of the tweet.

Thursday's incident was just the latest regarding one of Trump’s post being flagged or removed from the social media site.
