US job cuts year-to-date running at highest since 2009, Challenger says

Layoff announcements in the US were running at their highest level since 2009 at the start of the year, one of the country's best known staffing agencies said.

US based firms announced 77,770 job cuts in February, which marked a 24% fall month-on-month, according to Challenger, Gray and Christmas.

However, year-to-date layoff announcements were running at 180,713, having more than quadrupled in comparison to same two months of 2022.

It was also the highest tally for the two months combined since the 428,000 of cuts announced in January and February.
