The U.S. jobs market remained tight during the previous week.

According to the Department of Labor, in seasonally adjusted terms, the number of initial unemployment claims figures edged up by 3,000 over the week ending on 9 September to reach 220,000.

Economists had been anticipating a reading of 225,000.

The four-week moving average meanwhile slipped by 5,000 to 224,500.

Secondary jobless claims, which are those not being filed for the first time and referencing the week that ended on 2 September, were also little changed, rising by 4,000 to 1.688m.

Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, noted that Thursday's data might still be being distorted by the impact of Hurricane Idalia.

In his opinion, the underlying trend was nearer 240,000.
