Japanese brewer Asahi Group is mulling a swoop for beer brands Peroni and Grolsch that may have to be sold as part of the takeover of SABMiller by Anheuser-Busch InBev, according to reports.

The Wall Street Journal cited sources that suggested the group, which said in a statement on Tuesday that it was exploring various acquisition possibilities, was putting together a $3bn bid for the beer brands, with other buyers also emerging from Asia.

Thailand’s Thai Beverage was another mooted potential mover, the sources said, adding that there could be offers for the assets from one of both parties as soon as this week.
