US open: Stocks lower as volatile week draws to a close
Wall Street futures were in the red early on Friday as an up and down week for stocks gets set to draw to a close.
As of 1445 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.07% at 33,675.39, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.23% to 4,072.18 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.61% weaker at 11,717.23.
The Dow opened 24.49 points lower on Friday, extending losses recorded in the previous session.
Traders will look to the Federal Reserve's Christopher Waller and Patrick Harker on Friday, who will deliver speeches at 1730 GMT and 2100 GMT, respectively, as investors hope to gain more insight into the central bank's future plans for US monetary policy.
On the macro front, a preliminary reading of the University of Michigan's January consumer sentiment index will be published at 1500 GMT, while the Federal Government's monthly budget statement will be released at 1900 GMT.
In the corporate space, shares in Lyft slumped 35% as weak guidance sent investors running for the hills. The ride sharing company also revealed it had lost $588.0m on $1.2bn in revenues.
Newell Brands reported earnings that came in $0.05 ahead estimates on per share basis and revenues that topped Wall Street expectations.
