US open: Stocks move higher after latest GDP, jobs numbers

Stocks on Wall Street continued to climb with investor sentiment boosted by a batch of better-than-expected economic reports.

News that the European Central Bank had mimicked the Federal Reserve by also shifting to a 'data-dependent' mode also helped.

As at 1750 BST, the Dow Jones Industrials was adding 0.31% to 35,629.80, alongside a 0.66% rise for the S&P 500 to 4,597.19.

But it was the Nasdaq Composite that was again stealing the show, climbing 1.18% to 14,294.15.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures meanwhile were climbing 1.6% to $80.36 a barrel on the NYMEX.

According to the Department of Commerce, U.S. gross domestic product expanded at an annualised pace of 2.4% over the three months to June, feeding talk of a so-called 'soft landing' for the economy.

Similarly, durable goods orders for June were reported at up by 4.7% month-on-month (consensus: 1.0%).

The lion's share of the beat was the result of bumper orders for jet-maker Boeing, but excluding transportation orders did rise by 0.6% (consensus: 0.0%).

Weekly jobless claims also surprised to the downside again, slipping by 7,000 to 221,000 (consensus: 235,000).

Meta stock was jumping 6 on the back of its quarterly results.

E-Bay shares were down 9 alongside before the opening bell after the online retailer delivered a soft outlook overnight.

Southwest Airlines was down 9 after reporting that earnings had not returned to their pre-pandemic levels.

Chip-making giant Intel was due to report results after the close of Thursday's session.
