US open: Stocks trade higher as nonfarm payrolls beat expectations

Wall Street stocks opened higher on Friday as investors thumbed over a key jobs report.

As of 1520 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.07% at 34,657.06, while the S&P 500 was 0.29% firmer at 4,332.40 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.39% stronger at 14,578.41.

The Dow Jones opened 23.53 points higher on Friday, extending modest gains recorded in the previous session as market participants spent the day digesting a number of data points.

Friday's main focus was the Labor Department's all-important monthly jobs report, which revealed that non-farm payroll growth in the US picked up a tad more quickly than anticipated last month.

According to the Department of Labor, non-farm payrolls increased by 850,000 in June. That was better than the 700,000 gain expected by economists. The prior two months' prints for non-farm payrolls were revised up by a combined total of 15,000.

Elsewhere on the macro front, the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis revealed that the US goods and services deficit was $71.2bn in May, up $2.2bn from April's revised figure of $69.1bn. Exports were up $1.3bn month-on-month at $206.0bn and imports were $277.3bn, $3.5bn higher than seen in April.

Lastly, new orders for manufactured goods, or factory orders, in the US rose 1.7%, to $495.5bn in May, according to the Census Bureau. This reading followed April's contraction of 0.1% and came in slightly higher than market expectations for an increase of 1.5%.

In the corporate space, Boeing shares were in the red after one of the firm's cargo planes was forced to make an emergency landing in the ocean off the coast of Hawaii.

No major earnings were slated for release on Friday.
