Angela Eagle says she will run against Corbyn if he doesn't quit

Labour’s Angela Eagle on Monday said she would run against Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the party if he refused to step down.

Eagle, who quit as the party's spokeswoman on business issues after the EU referendum, said she had the support to run as Labour leader and resolve the “impasse” and would do so unless Corbyn considers his position.

Corbyn has rebuffed calls to resign despite a majority of lawmakers within his party passing a motion of no confidence in his leadership. The vote of no confidence last Tuesday followed a raft of resignations from Corbyn's shadow cabinet which came after complaints about his efforts in the EU referendum campaign.

"It's a week since Jeremy lost that vote of no confidence, and there are many other people up and down the country wanting him to consider his position,” Eagle said.

However, Corbyn has said he retains the support of the party's key members who would elect the leader in any contest. "I was democratically elected leader of our party for a new kind of politics by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning. Today's vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy,” he said after the no confidence vote.
