Boris Johnson: No government plan in event of no Brexit deal

Foreign secretary Boris Johnson has slammed the exit fees demanded by the European Union as ‘extortionate’ and admitted the government has no plan for a situation in which a Brexit deal cannot be agreed with the bloc.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday, the former London mayor said there was no need for a contingency plan in the case of a lack of agreement with EU negotiators.

"There is no plan for no deal because we are going to get a great deal," Johnson told MPs.

PM Theresa May said earlier this year that 'no deal is better than a bad deal', suggesting the government was preparing for the eventuality.

Johnson also criticised the amount of financial compensation demanded by European leaders in the early parts of the negotiations.

Johnson said: "The sums I have seen that they propose to demand from this country appear to be extortionate."

In response to a question in the parliamentary session in which he was asked whether he would tell EU counterparts to 'go whistle' over the financial demands, Johnson said it was an appropriate response.

"Go whistle seems to me to be an entirely appropriate expression," Johnson said.
