Counter Terrorism police investigating devices at three London transport hubs

The Met Police's Counter Terrorism Unit has launched an investigation after suspicious packages containing traces of explosive devices were found at three of London's major transport hubs.

A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags have been analysed by specialist officers after being found near Heathrow Airport, in the post room at Waterloo Station and at offices at City Aviation House, near London City Airport.

Nobody has been hurt and flights to and from the airports have been unaffected by the packages, but the authorities are understood to be treating the incidents as linked.

A spokesperson from Scotland Yard said: 'The packages – all A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags - have been assessed by specialist officers to be small improvised explosive devices. These devices, at this early stage of the investigation, appear capable of igniting an initially small fire when opened."

Police were first alerted this morning after the envelope found near Heathrow ignited after being opened by a member of staff.

A statement from Heathrow Airport said: "police are treating this as a criminal act and we will be assisting with this investigation".
