Prime Minister David Cameron has rejected US Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s proposal to prevent Muslims from entering the US, Bloomberg reported.

Trump issued a statement on Monday where he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on”.

People from all sides of the political spectrum have criticised the plan and his comments, and Bloomberg reported that he told a rally in South Carolina on Monday night, “we can be politically correct or we can be stupid”.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister told reporters on Tuesday that the comments "are divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong".

"The Prime Minister is very clear that as we look at how we tackle extremism and this poisonous ideology, politicians need to look at ways they can bring communities together and make clear that these terrorists are not representative of Islam."
