English Premier League clubs' spending caps £1bn this season

English Premier League football clubs have spent more than £1bn on transfers in a season for the first time, according to industry data.

Global advisory firm Deloitte’s bi-annual football spending survey suggests the last record – of £965m spent in 2014-15 – has already been beaten with clubs having until 2300 GMT on Monday to increase their spending towards signing new players.

Dan Jones, partner at Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, said: "We've seen Premier League clubs again use the January window to invest significantly in playing talent. With much of the day still left, the total gross spending this season has already reached £1bn for the first time."

In January 2015, Premier League clubs spent £45m on the final day of the transfer window. Later in the summer, the club with the biggest spending bill was Manchester City, which paid £55m to prize away Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg and £49m for Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.
