A fatberg equivalent to the weight of eleven double decker buses and twice the length of two Wembley football pitches has been found congesting a sewer in East London.

Thames Water announced on Monday that the "extreme rock-solid mass" of congealed fat found blocking a stretch of Victorian sewer in Whitechapel was made up of wet wipes, nappies, oil and condoms.

Matt Rimmer, Thames Water’s head of waste networks, said: “This fatberg is up there with the biggest we’ve ever seen".

"It’s a total monster and taking a lot of manpower and machinery to remove as it’s set hard".

As a result, Thames Waters engineers said that they had started "a three-week war" against the 250m long fatberg with the help of an eight strong crew, using high-powered jet hoses to break up the mass prior to sucking it out with tankers.
