The implied probability of 'Leave' coming out on top in the upcoming EU referendum edged higher on Wednesday, as betting picked up ahead of the vote, according to bookmaker Ladbrokes.

A "relentless stream of smaller bets" favouring Brexit pushed the odds of a victory for the 'Leave' camp higher by four percentage points.

The latest odds now put 'Leave' at 11/4 (from 3/1) with those for 'Remain' at 2/7 (from 1/4), equivalent to a 26% chance of a win for 'Leave' and of 74.0% for 'Remain'.

On average, the size of individual wagers on 'Remain' stood at £376 versus £72 for those betting on 'Leave'.

One bet for 'Remain' placed in Nottingham reached £20,000.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "The stage is set for the busiest political betting day in history. The serious cash is on remain, but there's a relentless stream of smaller bets on leave - the betting markets still heavily favour a remain outcome, but Brexit backers are betting this one will go right to the wire."
