Premier League clubs spend record £1.17bn in summer transfer window

English football clubs have set another billion-pound record during this summer’s transfer window with more than a week to spare.

Premier League teams have now spent £1.17bn on new players in the summer months, beating the previous record of £1.165bn set in the same period of last year, according to figures compiled by Deloitte.

Among the big players which changed hands during the window was Romelu Lukaku, the burly Belgian striker who arrived at Manchester United from Everton for a £75m fee.

Spanish forward Alvaro Morata arrived at Chelsea from Real Madrid for £70m.

The top 20 clubs in the country have seen a huge increase in revenues in relation to broadcasting rights from the likes of Sky and BT, and Deloitte consultant Chris Stenson said that the spending on transfer fees is within their limits.

"The level of transfer expenditure in this summer's window has been extraordinary," Stenson said.

"But when analysed in the context of record broadcast, commercial and matchday revenues, Premier League clubs are spending within their means."

Many more millions are expected to be spent in the final week before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.

"We expect further significant expenditure in the next seven days as clubs seek value in the market," Stenson added.

"Last summer, Premier League clubs spent around £300m in the final week of the window, more than they did throughout the entire January 2017 window."
