Record number of Brits switch energy suppliers in 2018
New data from energy industry group Energy UK showed a record number of Britons switched energy suppliers in 2018, with one in five customers reportedly choosing a new energy supplier during the year.
The data did not show which energy firms lost or gained customers, but the ‘big six’ suppliers have been hemorrhaging users in recent years as smaller, cheaper firms open up in the UK’s deregulated market.
Those big six suppliers are made up of Centrica brand British Gas, E.ON, EDF Energy, Innogy brand Npower, and Iberdrola-owned Scottish Power.
A total of 5.9 million energy customers moved to a new supplier in 2018, rising from 5.5 million in the prior year.
