Discount supermarket retailer Aldi said its UK arm plans to launch online sales next year, as it posted record annual sales for 2014.
The company said sales were up 31% to £6.9bn in the 12 months to 31 December 2014 from £5.72bn the previous year. Operating profit fell, however, to £260.3m from £271.4m, with Aldi attributing the decline to increased investment and the supermarket price war.
Investment rose to £438m in 2014 from £274.3m.
In addition, the company said it was on track to open another 65 stores this year.
The retailer said the online service will initially sell wine by the case and then move on to non-food offers in the spring. Customers will have the choice of home delivery and collection from third-party locations.
Chief executive of Aldi UK & Ireland, Matthew Barnes, said: "As the grocery market continues to evolve, our unique model, operational efficiency, private ownership and financial strength mean we're able to keep investing in our business - from people and presence to products and prices."
He added: "Our launch online is another exciting chapter in our story. This will enable us to introduce the Aldi brand and some of our best-selling, best quality and best value products to thousands more customers across the UK."
