Executives at Amec Foster Wheeler, the biggest oil and gas engineer in Britain, have held talks with the foreign secretary Philip Hammond about returning to Iran.

The discussions come after the nuclear agreement reached with the Iranian government earlier this year.

The deal is awaiting ratification from the US congress, after which Amec will be able to sign contracts with the Islamic country's authorities.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, chief executive Samir Brikho said: “Iran is certainly one of the countries we're looking at, but we can't do anytying while sanctions are in place.”

He added that one of the company's top management executives for the Middle East had been part of the delegation that recently travelled to Iran with Hammond to meet with Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani.
