One of Aquarius Platinum's employees at the Kroondal mine in South Africa was killed in an accident at the weekend, the mining group announced on Monday.

Pedro Tafulane Nhabinde, a team leader working at the Kwezi shaft at Kroondal, was fatally injured in a fall of ground incident on Saturday.

"The Aquarius board and management extend their sincere condolences to Mr Nhadine's family and colleagues," the company said in a statement.

Aquarius, which is one of the world's five-largest producers of platinum group metals (PGM), announced that it has suspended operations at the Kwezi shaft until a technical review of the area has taken place.

It said that the Department of Mineral Resources and representative unions have been notified of the incident.
