BT Group has appointed Clive Selley as the new chief executive officer of its broadband infrastructure unit, Openreach.

He will replace Joe Garney, who is leaving to become CEO of Nationwide Building Society and the handover will take place this quarter.

Selley is currently CEO of BT Technology, Service and Operations (TSO) and group chief information officer.

The company said he brings with him considerable technological and management experience, having held a number of senior positions at BT, both in the UK and overseas.

BT described TSO as the company’s “engine room”, responsible for its core networks and IT systems across the globe.

CEO Gavin Patterson said: “Clive is a hugely talented individual and I am delighted he has agreed to lead Openreach.

“He has an unrivalled knowledge of networks and engineering and is ideally suited to take the UK from a superfast nation to an ultrafast one. He supports our vision for the UK's digital future and will play a key role in ensuring that businesses, consumers and communities receive the services they need and deserve."

At 1052 GMT, BT shares were 0.2% lower at 464.60p.
