Camden Market blaze under control, no injuries reported

Market Tech, the owner of Camden Lock Market, said on Monday that the fire which tore through a building overnight has been isolated and limited damage has been caused.

More than 70 firefighters from Kentish Town, Euston, Soho, Paddington, Holloway and surrounding fire stations were at the scene of the fire which took hold at a property near Camden Stables just before midnight on Sunday, along with 10 fire engines. The London Fire Bridge said the first, second and third floors and the roof of a building in the market which contains several businesses and stalls have been damaged by the blaze.

Station Manager Andy Walton said: "The hard work and aggressive actions of the crews insured the fire was contained to the area of the building which was alight when the Brigade arrived."

He said the fire - the cause of which is still unknown - was brought under control just before 3am. Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters will remain at the scene on Monday morning damping down.

The Metropolitan Police, which was called to the Lock just after midnight, said there were no reports of injuries.

A spokesperson for Market Tech said: "An isolated fire broke out in a building adjacent to the market hall area of Camden Lock Market overnight which was brought quickly under control by the Emergency Services and we are now working closely with them to investigate the cause.

"Thankfully no one was injured during the incident. While a small section of Camden Lock Market will be closed off to the public until further notice as a precaution, the rest of Camden Lock Market and the wider area, including Stables Market and Union Street, will be fully open and operating and welcoming visitors and customers as usual today.

"We would like to emphasise that the fire was isolated and limited damage has been caused - only a very small section of Camden Lock market will be closed as a precaution today and the rest will be fully open as usual and welcoming customers and visitors."

This is the third time in less than 10 years that the market has been hit by a blaze. In February 2008 The Hawley Arms, six shops and 90 market stalls were damaged in a fire, while in 2014 around 600 people were forced to flee a fire in the Stables market.
