Cruiseline operator Carnival has kicked off the sailing Alaska season with both its Nieuw Amsterdam and Majestic Princess vessels setting sail over the weekend.

Carnival said the Holland America Line's Nieuw Amsterdam ship had set off from Seattle on 24 July, while Princess Cruises' vessel had departed the Pacific North West set on 25 July.

Each line will now operate ten cruises sailing out of Seattle, where they have been homeporting for more than 20 years, through September.

Carnival highlighted that the weekend's departures marked the return to cruising and Alaska for both lines, with one in two guests cruising to Alaska historically doing so while sailing on a Princess or Holland America vessel.

As of 0850 BST, Carnival shares were down 0.89% at 1,431.20p.
