German and Dutch pizza lovers will soon have their pies delivered by robots, as Domino’s announced a new partnership with robot tech firm Starship Technologies.

In a statement released by the London-listed pizza-makers, certain cities in Germany and Holland would soon be equipped with the six-legged machines to bring deliveries to customers within a one-mile radius of their nearest store.

Starship was set up in 2014 by two founders of Skype, Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis.

Online retail and other firms which rely on deliveries are increasingly looking towards alternative, non-human methods of moving their products to consumers. Amazon recently made its first ever drone delivery and has said it aims to increase its usage of the methods in years to come.

"With our growth plans over the next five to 10 years, we simply won’t have enough delivery drivers if we do not look to add to our fleet through initiatives such as this," Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Chief Executive Officer Don Meij said in a statement.

"Dependent on size, we can carry up to eight pizzas on a delivery or a variety of combinations of pizzas, sides and cold drinks or dessert products," the statement added.

Starship has already gained partnerships with other companies in the food delivery industry, including Just Eat.
