HSS Hire has announced that chief executive officer John Gill will step down after eight years at the tool and equipment rental company.

The group said Gill will leave once a successor - the search for which is under way - is in post, and following a handover period.

Chairman Alan Peterson said: "John has made an important contribution to the development of the business since joining HSS in 2009. As CEO from September 2015 he has led the company through a period of significant change as we implemented our new operating model.

"With this work now largely complete, the focus shifts to driving sales growth through the new network and the board believes it is the right time to look outside the business for a new CEO who can lead this next phase of our recovery."

HSS added that current trading and market conditions remain unchanged from the updates given in its full year results for 2016 on 5 April.

At 0930 BST, the shares were down 3.3% to 61.90p.
