IAG announced a big order for Airbus single aisle A320neo and A321neo jets.

The airline said it had converted the options for 12 A320neo aircraft announced in August 2013 into firm orders.

On top of that, an order was put in for another 25 A320neo jets, together with an option for an additional 50.

The exact split between A320neos and longer fuselage A321neos would be decided closer to the delivery dates.

In a statement, the carrier said that incorporation of the firm orders would occur between 2025 and 2028 and be used to replace the A320ceos in the short-haul fleet,.

Addition of the latest generation of Airbus's more fuel-efficient aircraft was also billed as an important step towards meeting climate commitments.

The A320neo family of jets were capable of delivering 20% less fuel burn and C02 emissions advantage.

The order was however subject to approval from shareholders.
