Ineos evacuates Grangemouth petrochemicals plant after gas leak reports

A petrochemicals plant in Scotland's Grangemouth owned by Ineos has been closed down with staff evacuated after a reported gas leak.

The company confirmed there had been an incident at the chemical plant and oil refinery, which employs more than 1,300 staff.

Local police said there had been a "major incident" at the plant, which is situated on the Firth of Forth.

Roads around Grangemouth were closed and people in the local area were advised to stay indoors, the Daily Record reported, with eight fire appliances and 40 firefighters at the scene.

Ineos is the UK’s largest privately owned company and one of the world’s largest chemical companies, with Grangemouth one of the largest of its sites, reportedly contributing between 3-4% of Scottish GDP.

The company manufactures more than 1m tonnes of chemicals a year, including ethylene, synthetic ethanol, polyethylene and polypropylene.
