Mobile satellite communications group Inmarsat will provide its GX in-flight broadband to an initial 69 of Lufthansa Group's low-cost Eurowings fleet.

The contract, which includes the option to add additional aircraft and is part of a 10-year strategic agreement with Lufthansa, has seen the first installations already completed by Lufthansa's technical team, with testing scheduled to begin in the New Year and all 69 to be complete by the middle of 2017.

Eurowings will be the first low-cost carrier to offer in-flight connectivity, which allows passengers to browse the internet, stream videos, check social media and more, with connectivity on par with broadband on the ground.

Inmarsat's existing partner Deutsche Telekom will be the internet service provider for Eurowings passengers.
