Another line of work could soon be displaced by robots, with Just Eat preparing to roll out self-driving delivery vehicles in London.

The FTSE 250 firm said the self-driving robots can find their way through city streets at four miles per hours, using GPS technology and onboard sensors and cameras to navigate.

Food is kept in a locked compartment, which customers can open with a unique code when the robot arrives at the door.

The machines have been tested 30 robots over 5,000 miles in Greenwich, as well as outside London in Glastonbury and Milton Keynes.

“We haven't lost a single robot in eight months, or been involved in any accidents that resulted in loss or injury,” Allan Martinson, chief operating officer of developer Starship Technologies, was quoted as saying by Sky News.

Just Eat confirmed it will start using the robots in London from the end of the month, to supplement drivers in busy times to enable restaurants to meet demand.

The company is not the first to use low-speed robots for food delivery - Domino’s Pizza began testing a similar concept in New Zealand earlier this year.
