National Express wins Nuremberg S-Bahn contract

National Express was celebrating on Wednesday morning, as its push into German territory continued with the announcement it had won the contract to operate Nuremberg's suburban rail services.
The Bavarian transport authority, Bayerische Eisenbahn Gesellschaft, confirmed late on Tuesday that the FTSE 250-listed passenger transport business would operate the Nuremberg S-Bahn for 12 years from December 2018.
"We are delighted with the decision", said spokesman Anthony Vigor.
"(National Express) has now secured €4bn of revenues in German rail and have a further €4bn in our active pipeline of future bids."
The win came as an extra success for National Express, as it won after an appeal from the incumbent operator - federal-owned Deutsche Bahn.
It also came after the launch on Sunday of the group's first German services - two contracts to run services on the Rhine Munster Express lines.
Germany's railways have faced stiff competition in the last three years, since deregulation allowed coaches to compete against the railways on the same routes.
