Games maker Nintendo Co Ltd has booked a sharply lower operating result for the April-June quarter, a period that did not include a financial contribution from the runaway success of Pokemon Go.

The Kyoto-based company posted a three-month operating loss of 5.1bn yen, from a 1.15bn yen profit a year ago.

Pokemon Go was rolled out about three weeks ago. Nintendo plans to launch Pokemon Go Plus in September.

Against this backcloth, the safe-haven appeal of Japan's yen has pushed that currency sharply higher against other units such as the dollar and sterling.
