Subscription broadcaster Sky announced a new commitment to virtual reality on Thursday, creating a dedicated in-house production unit - Sky VR Studio.

The FTSE 100 firm would release the unit's first pieces of content - two films shot during Formula 1 testing in Barcelona - on Friday. Sky said the films would transport viewers to the pit lane, into the team garages, and onto the track.

"The Sky VR Studio allows us to add a new dimension to storytelling, taking viewers to extraordinary places and offering a unique perspective on a whole host of events," said Sky's managing director of content Gary Davey.

"The development of VR technology is moving at an incredible pace and excitement is building about its potential," he added.

Over the coming year, Sky said the studio would drive the creation of cinematic, fully immersive virtual reality content, producing more than 20 individual films across a range of Sky content.

The team was being led by executive producer Neil Graham, and included production staff with rare and valuable experience in VR film making, the broadcaster said. Sky VR Studio was also being bolstered with the addition of award-winning virtual reality director Richard Nockles, who directed the F1 film.

"Our expertise across a wide range of video content, from original drama to live sport, gives us a unique ability to bring VR to life for customers," Davey explained.

"This is just the start and we’re looking forward to creating more amazing VR content and exploring the possibilities with our tech and content partners."

Sky had been building its expertise in the field for a number of years, having invested in US-based VR pioneer Jaunt in 2013, and already using the technology for a projects within the Sky News and Sky Movies units.
