Smith & Nephew's chief executive officer Olivier Bohuon has been diagnosed with cancer, it was revealed on Monday.

The FTSE 100 medical technology firm described the form of cancer as "highly treatable", and said Bohuon would remain chief executive officer and be actively involved in the company's operations through much of his treatment period.

Bohuon's treatment, which was expected to include chemotherapy, would begin late February and be completed by late autumn.

"Olivier has set a clear strategy that is invigorating Smith & Nephew's growth profile", said chairman Roberto Quarta.

"I am confident that Olivier and his team will continue to execute the plan successfully. Our thoughts are with him as he undergoes treatment", he added.

Bohuon was expected to present Smith & Nephew's full year results on 4 February as scheduled.

The company's board also approved provisional governance procedures to ensure the effective operation of the group during Bouhon's treatment period, including chairman Quarta providing executive oversight if required.
