Smurfit Kappa has been reconfirmed as a member of the Ethibel Sustainability Index for the fifth year in a row, it announced on Monday, which its said demonstrated its continued “best-in-class approach” to sustainability.

The FTSE 100 packaging giant said the Ethibel Sustainability Indices were composed of companies included in the Russell Global Index, displaying the “best performance” in the field of corporate social responsibility.

It said the selections were largely based on research carried out by Vigeo Eiris, a European rating agency responsible for data collecting and processing, performance and industry benchmarking.

“We invest a lot of time and resources into making sure that we continue to lead the way as a sustainable packaging supplier,” said Smurfit Kappa’s group vice-president of development, Steven Stoffer.

“We’re proud that Ethibel has recognised our work and commitment by including Smurfit Kappa in its Sustainability Index again this year.”

The listing came as Smurfit Kappa said it was continuing to make sustainable investments and commitments.

It released its Sustainable Development Report in May, and recently announced the launch of its ‘Better Planet Packaging’ initiative, which reportedly seeked to “explore and re-imagine” the packaging needed for a more sustainable world.
