Petrol and diesel prices in Britain's supermarkets are set to drop as Tesco and Asda followed Morrison's lead by reducing diesel and petrol by a smuch as 2p per litre.

Asda has announced it will be introducing a national cap, meaning motorists will not have to pay more than 105.7p per litre for unleaded and 106.7ppl on diesel in its 272 stations. Tesco brought in a 2p drop that took effect on Monday evening.

Peter Cattell, fuel director for Tesco, said: “We know that lots of customers will have plans for the summer holidays, so we’re dropping the price of our fuel to help them enjoy it even more."

"This reduction of up to 2p per litre on petrol and diesel at our 500 petrol filling stations will mean millions of customers save money by shopping at Tesco.”

Morrisons set off the price reductions last week as it lowered its unleaded price by 2p per litre.

“Among post-Brexit fuel price uncertainty, we are doing all we can to hold down prices for our customers," said services director Roger Fogg at the time.

The move is a welcome one for those travelling over the summer holiday period, after initial fears that a British vote to leave the European Union could cause prices to rise.
