The Essex-based business, which has annual sales of £100m, is believed to have appointed Numis to look into the possibility of a flotation, the Sunday Times reported.
Tamdown's clients include Bellway, Persimmon and Berkely Group.
The firm, which was set up in 1976, is owned by chairman Mike Morris, managing director Keith Breen and a number of other managers.
It specialises in infrastructure, high rise projects and also has its own utilities arm, TriConnex.
