Vedanta Resources has appointed Kuldip Kaura as interim chief executive officer with effect from 1 September.

The company said Kaura will take over from Tom Albanese - whose resignation was announced back in March - to ensure a smooth transition. Vedanta said he has extensive knowledge of the company's operations, having held a number of senior management and leadership roles at Vedanta and group companies over the past 15 years.

Executive chairman Anil Agarwal said: "On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Tom for his significant contribution to the business and wish him all the best for the future. Kuldip has the full support of the board and the management team and I am certain that he will provide strong leadership as we search for a permanent CEO."

Albanese will step down as CEO and from the board on Thursday, but will continue in his role as chairman of Vedanta subsidiary Konkola Copper Mines.

At 1520 BST, the shares were down 0.4% to 839p.
