American retail giant Wal Mart Stores could be finalising plans to name its China boss Sean Clarke as the new chief executive of its UK business Asda, it was reported on Monday.

The New York-listed conglomerate could announce Clarke as early as this week, said Sky News.

Current CEO of struggling supermarket chain Asda told Retail Week last week that the incoming chief operating officer Roger Burnley will be his successor.

Asda headhunted Burnley from Sainsbury’s last year, though he will only step into the role in October after a 12-month restraint of trade.

The grocer, which slipped behind Sainsbury’s into third place among UK grocers last year, reported its seventh straight quarter of declining sales in its latest report.
