Wizz Air expands again in January

January was another month of expansion for Wizz Air, with the fast-growing operator of more than 400 routes seeing capacity and passenger numbers expand during the month.

The FTSE 250 low-cost airline, with a focus in Eastern Europe, saw capacity increase to 1,823,600 in January - up 18.2% on the year prior.

Total passengers were up by 21% during the month, to 1,522,901. The airline's load factor was up 1.9 percentage points, to 83.5%.

On a rolling 12-month basis, Wizz Air's capacity was up 19.4%, passenger numbers were up 21.7% and its load factor was up 1.6 percentage points.

The airline continued its bold expansion plan during the month, announcing three new routes to Romania, three to Poland, one to Bulgaria and four to Hungary.

"Wizz Air also announced a doubling of flights from Budapest to Lisbon to four times a week, starting in March", the company's board said in a statement.

Wizz Air celebrated the passing of the two million passenger mark in Macedonia, having reached that number at Skopje and Ohrid in January.

The airline was also celebrating being recently crowned Value Airline of the Year by Air Transport World, for its operations in 2015.
