Wood Group announced on Wednesday that it had begun the second of two site construction services contracts to support the development of a new tissue production site for Sofidel in Central Ohio.

The FTSE 250 firm was subcontracted by Gray Construction, the construction firm selected to design and build the new Sofidel facility, to perform all necessary site and infrastructure preparation activities needed for a manufacturing facility for facial tissues, paper towels and other paper products.

Wood Group’s contract with Sofidel for phase one began in June 2016 with site grading and stone placement to establish the required site elevations in preparation for the construction of the production buildings and pavements, along with site stabilisation, and sediment and erosion control.

The work reportedly took around six months to complete, and was equivalent to building a concrete floor the size of 74 football fields.

Following the completion of phase one, Gray subcontracted Wood Group to complete second phase work.

That was focussed on the installation of storm wastewater, sanitary, domestic water, fire protection water, electrical duct banks and excavation of soil from building basement.

The second phase was expected to be completed in October.

“We are pleased to be building relationships with new customers, such as Sofidel, as we move to support new industries,” said Michele McNichol, CEO of Wood Group Asset Life Cycle Solutions in its western region.

“Our US construction service capabilities continue to grow and we are excited about the opportunities these are creating for both Wood Group and our customers.”
