Republican candidate for the White House Donald Trump has referred to his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as "the devil" at a campaign event on Monday.

Trump also claimed that the election is in danger of being rigged in favour of Clinton.

While describing the actions of Clinton's former challenger Bernie Sanders, the billionaire tycoon said that he had "made a deal with the devil. She's the devil."

In the hour-long speech in Pennsylvania, Trump called into question whether the election may actually be "rigged" against him.

“I’m afraid the election is going to be rigged, I have to be honest,” he told the crowd. He later repeated the claims on an interview with Fox News, saying "we’d better be careful, because that election is going to be rigged. And I hope the Republicans are watching closely or it’s going to be taken away from us.”

The Republican nominee has been criticised on both sides of the US political spectrum following comments he made towards the parents of a Muslim US soldier who was killed in Iraq, when he compared the sacrifices made by the family of Humayun Khan to his own sacrifices in creating jobs for American citizens.

On Monday, billionaire businessman Warren Buffett stronlgy criticised Trump's actions, and challenged him to release details of his tax returns. Former Republican candidate for president John McCain also spoke out in criticism of Trump, but did not withdraw his support for him.
