The funeral of Labour MP Jo Cox is set to take place on Friday after thousands of mourners lined the streets to pay their respects in her Yorkshire constituency Batley and Spen.

The popular politician was murdered as she attended to those in her local area at her advice surgery in Birstall in June.

The service to remember Cox will be held privately, but thousands of people, including those from the local primary school, came to throw white roses on the hearse to honour her life.

Mrs Cox's family asked that the funeral service remained a small private occasion for close friends and family only.

“Knowing that so many people share both our grief and our determination to take forward Jo’s legacy is a source of great strength at what otherwise feels like a very bleak time," her family said in a short statement.

"Now, particularly for the children, we have decided that Jo's funeral will be a very small and private family affair. Anybody from the local community who would like to pay their respects is welcome to gather along the areas outlined as we make this last journey. Following this we would ask everyone to respect our privacy to enable us to grieve and rebuild as a family.”

Mrs Cox had been an MP for a year before her tragic death, and was highly praised for her work with various charities during her time as a politician.
