Almost two thirds of Tory MPs who backed Brexit have sent a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to remain in office independent of the referendum result.

The letter was signed by 84 of the 135 Conservative MPs who supported a vote to leave the European Union, and was posted to Twitter by MP Robert Syms.

Stephen Metcalfe and Justin Tomlinson added their names to the letter after the release.

“We thank you for giving the British people a choice on their destiny on 23 June 2016,” the letter read.

“We believe whatever the British people decide, you have both a mandate and a duty to continue leading the nation implementing our 2015 manifesto.”

Prominent Brexit campaigners Michael Gove and Boris Johnson had their names on the letter, but others - including Iain Duncan Smith and John Redwood were not.
