UK MPs vote to renew Trident nuclear system

The UK parliament has voted to renew the Trident nuclear weapons system by 472 to 117.

The vote effectively approves the manufacture of four replacement submarines at an estimated £31bn.

The controversial subject divides many MPs, most notably Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn who wants to see the system scrapped.

However he was defied by many in his own party who are in favour of the nuclear deterrent. The BBC reported that 60% of Labour MPs sided with the government.
