Cars built before 1997 to be banned in Paris
French capital was at briefly the world's most polluted city in 2015
- By 2020 the ban will extend to cars produced before 2010
- Measure is part of a crackdown on air pollution within the metropolitan city

From the 1st of July, metropolitan French capital Paris will introduce new measures to combat air pollution, including the banning of cars built before 1997.
For a short time in 2015, Paris was the worst polluted city in the world, eclipsing pollution superpowers Beijing and New Delhi. It registered an air-quality index of 125, with 100 considered to be "harmful" and 150 "critical".
According to Le Monde, the ban will only affect weekdays between 8am and 8pm and is expected to reduce the traffic in the city by 10% during those times.

The city's mayor Anne Hidalgo introuduced emergency traffic bans in time of extreme air contamination, and on the day of the first emergency case, 40% less nitrogen dioxide was registered in the air.
Last month Hidalgo also introduced a new measure whereby the Champs -Elysees would be closed for vehicles one Sunday per month in order to battle the rising pollution.
