London’s FTSE 100 was up 0.4% at 7,653.85 in afternoon trade on Thursday.

BP was the standout gainer on the index as oil prices remained higher, albeit lower than recent highs.

On the downside, Taylor Wimpey, WPP and B&Q owner Kingfisher all fell as they traded without entitlement to the dividend.

Barclays was lower as it emerged that former chief executive Jes Staley has been banned and fined nearly £2m by the City watchdog over his relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Barclays said it had concluded that Staley was now ineligible for, or should forfeit, bonuses and other awards totalling £17.8m.
